The North Coast, which most Egyptians simply call Sahel, is the long stretch of Mediterranean coast west of Alexandria: white sand, turquoise water and dozens of holiday compounds. Every summer, families and groups of friends from Cairo and Alexandria move there for weekends, weeks or the whole season.
Almost all stays are in chalets and villas inside gated compounds, many with pools, beaches and restaurants. Renting directly from an owner gives you a whole home, often with a garden or a roof terrace, for a weekend or longer.
Where to stay on the North Coast
The compounds closer to Alexandria are older and usually cheaper, with a short drive to the city. They suit families who come for the beach and want good value.
Around Marina and El Alamein you find the busiest part of the coast: large compounds such as Marina and Marassi, restaurants, beach clubs and New Alamein city with its towers and promenade. Lively in summer, with plenty to do.
Further west, around Sidi Abdel Rahman, Hacienda, Almaza Bay and Ras El Hekma, the compounds are newer, quieter and often more exclusive, with some of the clearest water on the coast.
Compound rules to know before you book
Most compounds control who comes in. Guests usually have to be registered at the gate by the owner before they arrive, and some compounds have their own rules for beach and pool access, wristbands, visitors and entry fees.
Ask the host how guest registration works, what is included (beach, pools, parking) and whether any compound fees are paid separately. Good hosts list this in their house rules.
When to go
July and August are the peak of the season, when the compounds are full and prices are at their highest. June and September are calmer, with warm water and lower prices.
Outside summer the coast is quiet and many restaurants close, but it can be a good choice for a peaceful break in spring or autumn. For July and August weekends, book well ahead.
Getting there
From Cairo, the drive takes roughly three to four hours, depending on how far west you go. From Alexandria, the nearest compounds are about an hour away.
El Alamein International Airport has flights during the summer season. Inside the compounds most people get around on foot, by golf cart or by car.
