Fayoum is the easiest escape from Cairo that feels like a different world: a green oasis around Lake Qarun, with desert, waterfalls and quiet villages all within a short drive. It is the classic weekend trip for Cairo families and friends who want fresh air, stars at night and a slower pace.
Most stays are villas, guesthouses and garden homes, many in and around Tunis village on the lake, often with a pool, a garden and a view of the water.
Where to stay in Fayoum
Tunis village, on the slopes above Lake Qarun, is the favourite: a quiet village known for its pottery workshops, with garden villas, guesthouses and small cafés. It is calm, green and has the best lake views.
Along the shores of Lake Qarun you also find holiday homes and lodges closer to the water. Fayoum city itself is practical for shops and services but has fewer holiday stays.
What to do
Wadi El Rayan is a protected area with two lakes joined by Egypt’s best-known desert waterfalls, and dunes nearby for sandboarding. Wadi Al-Hitan (Whale Valley), a UNESCO World Heritage site, has fossil skeletons of ancient whales lying in the open desert.
In Tunis village you can visit the pottery workshops and try making your own. At night, far from the city lights, the stars are the main event.
When to go
October to April is the best time: warm days and cool, sometimes cold nights, so pack a jumper. Summer days are hot; a place with a pool helps.
Weekends and holidays are busy with visitors from Cairo, so book ahead for Fridays and Saturdays. Weekdays are much quieter.
Getting there
Fayoum is about two hours by car from central Cairo. A car is the easiest way to get around, since the lake, Wadi El Rayan and Wadi Al-Hitan are spread out; the desert sites are best visited with a 4x4 tour or a local guide.
