Cairo is huge, and where you stay decides how your trip feels. A furnished apartment in the right neighbourhood puts you near the places you will actually spend time, whether that is a museum, an office, a university or family.

People rent apartments in Cairo for city breaks, business trips, medical visits, weddings and family occasions, and for months at a time while studying, working or looking for a long-term home. Many hosts rent by the night, and some offer lower prices for weekly and monthly stays.

Where to stay in Cairo

Zamalek is a leafy island in the Nile with embassies, cafés, galleries and quiet streets. It is central, walkable by Cairo standards, and a favourite with first-time visitors.

Downtown and Garden City put you close to Tahrir Square, the Egyptian Museum and the city’s grand old buildings. Expect more noise and more life, and lower prices than Zamalek.

Maadi, in the south, is green and residential, with a large international community, cafés and a metro line into the centre. It suits families and longer stays.

Heliopolis and Nasr City are close to Cairo International Airport, with malls, restaurants and wide avenues. New Cairo and the Fifth Settlement, further east, are newer areas of compounds, malls and universities, where a car makes life much easier.

What to see

The Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square, the mosques and alleys of Islamic Cairo and Khan El Khalili, Coptic Cairo, and a felucca ride on the Nile at sunset are all inside the city.

The Pyramids of Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum are on the western edge of Greater Cairo, about an hour from the centre depending on traffic, so plan them as a day of their own.

When to go

October to April is the most comfortable time, with warm days and cool evenings. Summer is hot and dry, and the city moves later into the night.

Ramadan changes the rhythm of the city: quieter days and lively evenings after iftar. It is a special time to visit if you plan around it.

Getting around

Traffic is heavy, so choose your neighbourhood by where you will spend most of your time rather than by distance on a map. Ride-hailing apps are the easiest way to move around, and the metro is fast and cheap for the areas it reaches.

Cairo International Airport is in the north-east, near Heliopolis. From there, the centre and Zamalek are usually 45 minutes to an hour by car.

Can I book a stay in Cairo on Guestify yet?

Not yet. Guestify is opening soon, and we are onboarding local hosts in Cairo now. Their listings will appear on this page as soon as they are published.

Can I rent a furnished apartment in Cairo by the month?

Yes, if the host allows long stays. Some hosts offer a weekly discount (7 nights or more) or a monthly discount (28 nights or more), and it is included in the total you see before you book.
